JAM’ing

February 21, 2005

:sun I haven’t posted in a while because I’ve been spending my free time playing with my latest phone, the i-mate JAM. Based on the 6 weeks I’ve had it, I have to say that this phone is the business.

I’ve always been interested in the XDA type phone, but thought that they were too big (you’d look like a plum holding it to your ear). The JAM on the other hand is just right in terms of size and functionality. The only thing it’s lacking is built-in wireless. So I bought the SANDISK combined wireless and 256MB SD card to cover that, and it works flawlessly.

Clearly not a replacement for a dedicated camcorder or digital camera, the built in camera takes reasonable pictures and videos (with sound) as long as you take them outside (good light).

The best thing is that since it has an operating system of sorts, you can load or develop software for it. Amongst others, I’ve installed TomTom satelite navigation and several VoIP clients.

Verdict: 8/10 – points deducted for lack of WiFi and memory limitations.
